Erythrina herbacea

Cherokee Bean, Coral Bean

The gorgeous, eye catching, red tubular flowers of Coral Bean (AKA Cherokee Bean,) arise in the spring and continue to bloom for several weeks, delighting your early hummingbirds. Native to the southeastern US. Early blooms may be damaged by a late frost but it will send up new flowers as if nothing happened. Seeds are highly attractive, but also very toxic. Deadhead the plants, or harvest the seeds quickly to keep them away from children and pets. This will also keep it from self seeding, which is a problem in some areas.

Blooms: Late Winter to Early Summer

Pot Size: 3½" Zone: 8-10 Height: 3-4 Feet Width: 3-4 Feet Flower Color: Red
